Now the DPF is not just trapping the soot, it’s trapping the burnt oil vapor. When the oil has a high NOACK Value oil vapor is also building up in the DPF. As diesel fuel washes past the piston rings during DPF regeneration the diesel fuel thins the oil. In a hot running BlueTec diesel, high viscosity oil is needed for high fuel accretion and for the extreme heat.

A low NOACK Value means the oil won’t vaporize so easy and is less likely to end up in the DPF. That’s why the NOACK Volatility and the oil viscosity are so important. All of the extra heat and fuel dilution in a BlueTec diesel causes the engine to burn oil. When the DPF fills with soot from the exhaust it needs to regenerate every so often to burn off the soot. The oil in a BlueTec diesel is much more complicated than the oil in a gas engine. You need to use an oil with no friction modifiers and extra soot scatter. A few years ago I tried to explain it to owners, but I caught to much grief over it. There is a way to reverse the bore polish. If you change the oil sooner, you’ll get to about 120K. If you drive at high speeds in mild weather, you’ll get to about 80K before you have problems. You can expect lots of “limp home” and “check engine” lights before you’re out of warranty. If you idle a lot or drive in stop and go city traffic, there is not enough compression gases to force the piston rings tightly against the cylinder walls. It will run on the wrong oil until it’s out of warranty. When you take delivery of your new Sprinter BlueTec diesel, it has Gasoline rated engine oil in the motor. If the engine started life with Break-in oil and then went to actual diesel oil with the correct ACEA “E9” or API “CK-4” approval, you would not have nearly as many check engine lights. When the cylinder walls become highly polished, oil blows past the piston rings and clogs the EGR, Air Intake and the DPF. It breaks up the soot so it can’t do as much damage. Diesel oil needs a additive known as “soot scatter”. The bigger the soot particles, the quicker the soot works with the friction modifiers and polishes the cylinder walls. As it builds up in the oil, it clumps together. That’s what the DPF is trying to clean up. Gasoline engine oil also doesn’t have “soot scatter”. In it, Mercedes says the MB229.5 oil is for gas engines. You can find it on the official Sprinter website.
#Mercedes bluetech diesel manual
The 2019 Sprinter BlueTec owners manual is a little clearer. They just word it in such a confusing manner that most owners don’t bother. Does anyone read their owners manual? Mercedes actually tells owners what the correct oil actually is. They only use the Mercedes 5W/40 oil with the MB229.5 approval rating. It’s gotten so bad, some dealers tell owners that they don’t use the 5W/30 ESP. This got so bad a few years ago, that Mercedes had to re-bottle the Mobil One into oil bottles with the Mercedes logo. Your engine will constantly have blow-by that will get progressively worse. “Bore Glazing” and “Bore Polishing” are not the same. Google “Diesel Bore Polishing” if you want to know more. What do you get? Your cylinder walls get what’s known as “Bore Polishing”. They get slightly better fuel economy with Gasoline rated oil. Mercedes wants to get the highest fuel economy as possible. Diesel oil also has friction modifiers, but not as much. Mercedes uses a Gasoline oil because it has extra friction modifiers. Ask them if the oil is API “CK-4”? That is also for a BlueTec diesel. Call Mobil and ask them if the oil is ACEA approved for “E9”? That’s the oil for a BlueTec diesel. Go to the Mobil Product Data sheet and look for yourself. Mercedes is using a Gasoline engine oil in every new BlueTec diesel. I normally have to think about what I’ll say, because everybody and their Mother gets twisted. I get so many calls about what’s the best oil, that I haven’t had time.

I need to rewrite this article about BlueTec diesel oil.
